Hoya

Hoyas, commonly known as wax plants due to their thick, waxy leaves, are tropical, typically vining or trailing plants related to milkweed. If you’re familiar with the milkweed plants people add to their gardens for butterflies, you’ll recognize the similarities between common milkweed flowers and hoya blooms. Both have star-shaped blooms that have a prominent calyx with a pronounced stigmata in the center. Both tend to form in clusters or umbels and both are heavy nectar producers. You’ll often find your hoya flowers dripping with nectar. But possibly the most rewarding feature of the Hoyas are the fragrances. Each species is slightly different but all of them smell amazing when they bloom – and they’ll fill the room with their powerful perfume.
